Vintage charts — which are graphs that plot the quality and character of wines from a particular region in a specific year — are really only useful for hardcore wine lovers who buy more mature wines. That leaves most of us out, as the vast majority of wine is bought and consumed at the time of its initial release: that is, very young. Most wine is of acceptable quality when young, irrespective of the vintage year. It's when it starts to mature that the effects of the season kick in, and these have a greater impact the longer the wine ages.
